Absence, Illness & Medicines, Holidays
It is very important that you ring the school office on 01229 585211 if your child will not be attending school due to illness, an appointment etc. The office is staffed from 8:30am until 4pm and messages can be left on our answering machine outside office hours.
It is school policy to follow up unexplained absences. We always ring home if a child is not in school and we have not been informed of a reason and we will ring all contact numbers if there is no-one at home. It will save a lot of time and possible worry if you call us first thing in the morning.
If it is known that your child will be absent from school for dental or medical reasons, prior notice would be appreciated. It would also help if routine medical examinations could be arranged during school holidays or after school.
CHILDREN GOING OUT FROM SCHOOL
There are occasions when, for various reasons, parents need to take their child out of school. In each case the class teacher should be informed of this at the beginning of the school day. If you wish your child to leave school early, please let the school office know beforehand and arrange to collect your child from the main entrance of the school where they can be signed out. Children should also be returned via the main entrance to be signed back in.
ABSENCE DURING TERM TIME
Family holidays should be taken during the school holidays. In 2013 the Government made changes to the law with regard to holidays in term time. It has removed the discretionary 10 day period of absence which covered family holidays and schools are now required to refuse requests for holiday absence in term time. However, Headteachers may grant a leave of absence in exceptional circumstances. If it is absolutely necessary to take your child out of school during term time you must complete a Notification of Leave of Absence form to advise school of the absence. Forms are available from the school office and authorisation will only be given in exceptional circumstances, following a discussion with the Headteacher, and will not be given for test weeks or the week immediately prior to test weeks. Any holiday or event that can be arranged during school holiday periods will not be authorised during the school term.
An unauthorised absence from school is any absence that is deemed not to be an acceptable reason for missing school. Unauthorised absences from school carry the risk of prosecution under section 444 or 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996. In accordance with Cumbria County Council’s School Absence Enforcement Policy, parents may be issued with a penalty notice if a leave of absence is taken without permission.
If a child has an accident or is ill at school and we feel that they would be better at home, we will endeavour to contact you, using the information on the contact slip. If, however, we are unable to contact you, we will keep your child in school or, if necessary, take the appropriate action of contacting your family doctor or the Casualty Department at Furness General Hospital.
If your child needs to have medicine during the school day then the medicine should be clearly labelled with the contents, owner's name and dosage. It should be in its original packaging with clear pharmacy notes attached (where applicable) and brought to the office where you will be asked to complete and sign a consent form.
